Biography -
Marc Lawrence has been responsible in one way or another for more elements of emotion in the entertainment media than the average viewer could possibly be aware. Long respected within the industry both for his hundreds of memorable and incisive "heavies" in the crime suspense genres and for his directorial work on television and film ("Nightmare in the Sun"), Lawrence is today recognized by critics, scholars, and audiences alike for his multi-faceted contributions to the art and industry of motion pictures.

Currently featured in "Ruby", starring Danny Aiello, Lawrence also confronts us daily with his sinister and expressive face and dry voice in just about every mafia-gangster late show that airs. He appears most memorably in "Key Largo" (as Ziggy), "The Asphalt Jungle" (as Cobby), and "Cloak and Dagger" (in one of the cinema's most violent fights-to-the-death with Gary Cooper). Add the fact that Lawrence has directed over 30 television episodes and acted in even more, one begins to get an understanding of just how all-pervasive an influence Marc Lawrence is in our lives. His current projects, which include a three-act play which he and his charming wife, Fanya, co-authored titled "That Time of Life" and an original screenplay "The Golden Fleece" indicate that Lawrence has no intentions of resting on his laurels, as he yet expands his spheres of influence.

Born in New York, Lawrence entered film via the theater. Success in student productions brought him to the Provincetown Playhouse and in 1930, to a two-year Scholarship with Eva La Gallienne's eminent repertory theater. 1933 saw his film debut in "White Woman"; and Lawrence was soon established in the film industry with a Columbia contract. From 1933 through 1951, Lawrence appeared in over 100 Hollywood films, firmly establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most durable and versatile character actors.

As Ian Cameron has written in his book "The Heavies", Marc Lawrence is as familiar a face in crime movies as Victor Jory is in westerns. Pock-marked and rather swarthy, Lawrence benefited from the Italian background of American crime and became a stock gunman and mafia head. Lawrence's impressive credits during the '40's include: "Johnny Apollo", "Blossoms of Dust", "Nazi Agent", "This Gun For Hire", "The Oxbow Incident", "Cloak and Dagger", "Unconquered", "Key Largo", "The Asphalt Jungle", "The Shepard of the Hills", and three Abbott and Costello movies.

Blacklisted in Hollywood during those turbulent flag-waving days of the '50's, Lawrence continued his acting career in Europe, being featured in some 20 pictures in Italy; seven under contract to Ponti-de Laurentiis. In 1958 Lawrence returned to the stage in London with his critically acclaimed portrayal of "Eddie Carbene" in "A View from the Bridge", whose performance The Stage
termed "a personal triumph for Lawrence". Ben Hecht went on record to cite it as "one of the three greatest performances I've seen in 30 years." The Liverpool Evening News echoed "The most intensely electrifying performance the English stage had seen for some time." And the London Daily News succinctly summed up the general critical reception in one word: "Brilliant."

Back in Hollywood in 1960, at the suggestion of Lee Marvin, Lawrence started directing for television with an episode of "The M Squad". This lead to a couple of "Roaring Twenties" episodes for Warners, which in turn developed into 2 years and over 25 directorial credits at Warners on such series as "The Law Man", "Maverick", "77 Sunset Strip", and "Room for One More". It was in television that Lawrence first really had the opportunity to expose a side of his character that was rarely evident in his foreboding movie roles; his sense of humor. Off-screen, Lawrence is equally fascinated by and adept at comedy as well as drama; a face he has clearly demonstrated in several TV episodes.
